Hummingbird nectar

Make your own hummingbird nectar! Why buy it? It's cheaper and safer than buying it with the artificial food coloring. If it's bad for us, these little creatures definitely should not have it either! Despite what most people assume, they are not attracted to the color of the water, but the container itself. You can purchase a hummingbird feeder at your local garden supply store.

All you need Is 1/4 cup of sugar (non GMO sugar, Cane sugar or Organic sugar is best) and 1 cup of water.

Put it in a pot on the stove over medium heat. Stir until it's all clear. and Voila! It's ready! Let it cool before pouring into the container.

My hummingbirds visit us year round and I have multiple feeders. One feeder is even hung on my kitchen window with a suction cup. These tiny birds are very territorial, so sometimes it's best to place them in different parts of the yard. In the wintertime I have to rotate them to avoid freezing.

Leftover nectar is stored in the refrigerator. I usually make about four cups at a time, so I can just refill them when needed.

Enjoy! - Kissa
